The Article V Opportunity

We live in tumultuous political times. The divides between ideologies and political principles appear to be widening at astonishing rates while many of the fundamentals vital to this nation’s future are obscured by the political cacophony of the day.

Meanwhile there are underlying threats to our society that show no respect to Democrat, Republican, Independent, conservative, liberal, or ‘none of the above.’ The spiraling national debt, surpassing $22,000,000,000,000, now exceeds the country’s gross national product. This guarantees an unmanageable burden on our children and grandchildren, whose economic security is being robbed by our own generation. The federal government reaches into our lives and adversely affects our independence and livelihoods, often without legitimate reason. Elected politics have become a career choice rather than an opportunity for service. As a result, this country continues its inexorable slide away from prosperity and security and toward a bleak unrecognizable future.

The nation’s founders, by adding Article V to the Constitution of the United States, provided the mechanism for course corrections to address such problems as these. The existing 27 amendments to the Constitution are all the product of the power of Article V, which both Congress and the States have the authority to exercise.

Congress has proven it will not act to impose fiscal accountability on itself. Nor will they entertain restraints on their capacity to cause federal government over-reach. And, they stubbornly demonstrate they will not place limits on their own time in office. It is time for the States to invoke Article V and give the American people the tool to constitutionally deal with these abuses.

Two thirds (34) of the state legislatures, by passing resolutions calling for a convention of the states to propose amendments, have the opportunity to bring all 50 together to propose amendments to the Constitution of the United States that would [1] impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, [2] limit the power and jurisdiction of the federal government, and [3] limit the terms of office for its officials and for members of Congress. The proposed amendments would then be placed before all the States and ratified only if least three fourths (38) agree.

Legislation will be introduced in the 2020 New Mexico Legislature calling for a convention of the states to address these three principles. A number of legislators have already indicated their desire to sponsor the resolution.

This is not a Democrat or Republican initiative. It is our opportunity to rise above partisanship and come together to rescue this country and its future generations from inescapable financial and social breakdown.

Your support is of historic significance and will help assure the future of our democracy and its people.
